The Dig Diary 2000--Part 3

Tuesday 26 September

Julie Dawson has arrived about 3 am, courtesy of Egypt Air changing her direct flight to Luxor to one via Cairo. She insists on joining us for breakfast, but comes to the tomb a little later. She can only be here for a little while, but wants to wrap up the object conservation and check whatever else she can. Her major remaining job is to finish the conservation and mounting of the linen, described in last year's report. She gets out a medium sized but very fragile piece of linen shroud and begins the process of relaxing the fibres so that it can be properly mounted.

Elsewhere, Nigel & Helen continue with checking wall plans. In the courtyard and front of the tomb, work on the pottery continues. Today more work is done on the marl vessels, and several more are identified and reconstructed to an extent that they can be documented. One particular amphora was broken into many pieces and its sherds used for digging by robbers; this means that the edges are rather worn, but it is possible to use them to help reconstruct the pot. In the right-hand photo you can see the sherds being glued together.

Most archaeological work, especially when working up material in the post-excavation stage, tends to be 90% basic effort with perhaps 10% excitement. So having described what everyone is up to at the moment, there is relatively little different to relate for today.

Pottery: today began the task of trying to put together the body sherds of the large silt jars. This is going to take a lot of time, but is important as they form such a lot of the Senneferi pottery. For the second part of the day, work continued on the smaller marl vessels, including the foreign imports; among the latter are some Cypriot vessels, and one Mycenaean sherd. Amanda succeeded in getting her amphora together, and so she deserves today's pottery picture.

Julie continued work on the shroud, relaxing and straightening it out little by little. As she can only do a little at once (she has to wait while the fibres relax), she sets to other tasks, such as double-checking some parts of her condition survey of the tomb. Here you see her checking some of the plaster around the doorway between the long passage and the rear room of the tomb.

 Helen and Nigel completed the checking of the wall plans of the tomb. These have revealed that some little details of the paintings have not been copied, in particular the kheker friezes at the tops of the walls. It is normal not to copy all of these, because of the time factor, but the wall plans will be better if these details are present, at least a couple of examples. So Nigel got on with that while Helen checked the ceilings.
